Snapshots from Cooya

On my last day at home Dad and I took the dogs to Cooya beach for a run and a spot of fishing. We caught a small flathead, too small, so we put him back. The beach and the ocean up this far both are so beautiful, the way they smell and water that's so warm you just want to lounge around in it. I miss it already.

Tropical snapshot from the hill

This week I spent four days in Julatten and Mossman hanging out with my parents and my lovely grandpa or 'Poppy' as we call him. It's pretty laid back up there, we did a lot of eating, drinking wine, playing with the berserk dogs and watching episodes of Outnumbered. I also had a bit of time to play with my camera and the other man in my life (my new mac). If only all my days could be spent eating, drinking and faffing about.

Sour dala

I made this cute cake with lemons from the myer lemon tree. It looks pretty but it tasted so sour we all pulled frog in a drain pipe faces eating it. So, like, I totally should have caramelised the lemon slices first. Cake fail.

The long way round

People ask why I don't visit my family more often, after six hours of domestic travel I remember why. After leaving home at 3pm to get to the airport suitably early, a slight delay, a two-hour plane trip, a sphincter twitching landing and then a two-hour drive home I have established that someone needs to invent teleportation. The road from Cairns to Mossman was cut due to torrential rain, so my poor, old dad drove a 274km round trip to pick us up from the airport. Mum and I had also been to IKEA that day so we were knackered. The shit-eating grin my Finnish grandpa had on his face as he hoovered down his IKEA matjes made it all worth it, all six hours of it.

Memories from Moscow

Its 7 o’clock on the dot and a dog howls in the street somewhere, his sad yowl stops and here in the stuffy room a slow quiet snore begins.

A shopping mall in the outskirts of Moscow.
Can you see the tiny bird in the top right corner?

One of the many beautiful 'onion-top' churches in and around Moscow

Some stray dogs, curled up to keep warm.
If I could have taken them home with I would have.

Sybil, you need to get on more things ...

Say hello to Maddie the coonhound.  This dog is winner, a total winner. I paid $185 for Sybil at the RSPCA almost nine years ago and not once has she kept still, balanced on a shopping trolley to be photographed. I think I should get a refund or a coonhound.

Wasabi happening Pinterest?

Oh Pinterest ... I type in 'wasabi' and you give me a good five minutes of visual gratification. Thank you, thank you for all your pretty, pointless pictures.

My mum is here for a visit all the way from tropical north Queensland. We're going to hit the delis, the cafes and the opshops hard, real hard. We're also going to go to IKEA as Veikko, the Scandi grandpa has placed an order for herring (in jars). It's going to be great!

Puppies for sale

I saw an article today outlining how the Trading Post was teaming up with the RSPCA to help rehome shelter animals. Awwwwwe, I thought. So, I went onto the website and was disappointed to see images like this, complete with the statement 'sorry, we do not ship puppies'. Apparently they're really hard to fit into those poster tubes.

I feel very sad for this poor pup being held up to the camera with a pair of rubber gloves in some dirty back room at 'Puppy World'. I mean serioulsy, puppy world WTF. Why, do people continue to want these 'pure bred' puppies from puppy factories. Do they think that if the pup comes with 'papers' it'll be able to program the DVD player or get in to ANU? I wonder if the git who buys this poor, sad looking pup (for $800 no less) knows that it's likely to have the genetic defect syringomyelia - where the dogs skull is too small to accommodate all of the brain’s cerebellum du to inbreeding.

If you want a puppy there are hundreds of perfectly good ones at the RSPCA, short ones, big ones, cute ones, sad ones. Places like Puppy World are total bullshit, why anyone would shop for the lifelong companion there, I do not know.

Sunday 4 March at South Bank

Please don't rain! I've had a string of crappy market days of late, so I'm asking the makers of shitty weather to defer the rain until Monday. Rain or shine, I will be at the Young Designers Market tomorrow from about 9am. I will have all the usual kit; brooches, bag, cards, softie dolls, and gift tags. Please come down and say hi ... we love to see people who love handmade and appreciate the hard work that goes into each piece.

Stay away till Monday? From here

Sybil - pros and cons

Sybil came home with me from the RSPCA about eight years ago. She was ten months old and had been a street dog who had suffered some type of abuse as she was quite a timid thing. She had a name like 'Shara' but I knew she was a Sybil, so after Cybill Shepard (she's half Belgian Shepard) and Sybil Fawlty I named my new best friend.

Over the years we have had a love hate relationship - she always loves me, no matter what and I hate it when she; rolls in something dead, walks inside wet and leans against the wall, eats chicken shit then licks me, farts and then leaves the room, looks me dead in the eye as she lowers her arse to the polished wooden floor for a 'schooch'. But as many cons as Sybil has she has one redeeming pro - she's my dog. There is something so wonderful about getting home and looking into that face, full of absolute adoration and trust.

So Sybil, I know we threaten to take you back to the RSCPA every time you bark like a spazmoid at a bus when you're tied in the back of the ute or snack from the bin - but we won't. You're the coolest dog ever.

The many faces of Sybil ...

This beautiful old kelpie is 19 years old ... part of Isa Leshko's 'elderly animals' series.
