Don’t give stupid this Christmas

The power of ‘give’. That’s what Myer is toting this festive season and it’s a nice line. Except that it is the kind of materialist ‘give’ that totally gets my festive goat this time of year.

Why give just because it’s Christmas? Why give your in-laws a kitchen gadget they’ll use once and then throw out or put away never to make another air-popped snack again? When I saw the ‘power of give’ ads on TV my first thought was ‘fucking bollocks’ followed closely by ‘landfill’ and then ‘what could that money be better spent on?’

In the manic orgy that is last-minute Christ-idiot-mass preparations, I see people filling trolleys with food for feasts and a whole heap of crap they don’t need. But it’s Christmas so I must buy you gifts to prove my; 1. love for you 2. generousity of spirit.

This year, I’m bah humbugging it up a notch. Not only am I continuing on my tradition of losing my shit in Woolworths and muttering ‘I hate Christmas, I hate everyone in this store right now’ but I’m going to giftwrap nothing – nada- zip.

By nothing I mean no gizmos, no hotdog makers, no chintzy jewellery, no delightfully fizzy bath bombs, no naa-zing.

I will however take Myer up on their ‘power of give’ by buying nothing from their store and spending my money on the actual power of give. Sorry Bernie I know you’re already worried about all those people with disabilities taking your money!
Through Oxfam you can give a family in need a goat or a duck ...
who wouldn't want a duck for Xmas, seriously!

In 2013 I donated to ovarian cancer through Frocktober, cervical cancer through the UQ Diamantina Institute, this guy who got dealt a shitty hand, the Asthma Foundation and probably some others I can’t remember. You donated too (you’re awesome) - a $2 raffle ticket a pin for legacy and so on and so forth. In 2012 we (Australians) were the best givers – boo yah! But we’re down to 7th place now, but don’t be sad that’s still pretty good.

I’m no Chuck Feeney, I don’t have millions to give away (what an awesome guy, seriously) but my $10 here and $5 there adds up and can make a difference. Giving actually makes you feel good, that’s Christmasy - happy faces.

I mostly donate to research, as clever people who work their arse off to help people who have shitty, shitty things like cancer inspire me. A few science boffins who I’m crushing on right now include Ian Frazer and Goli Samimi. Ian is the guy who helped engineer Gardasil, the HPV vaccine against cervical cancer and Goli is working on the world's first early detection test for ovarian cancer.

I also like these guys over at Thank You, they have pretty tasty muesli bars that are good for people like me who go all weird and fainty if I don’t have enough breakfast and someone in need gets breakfast too.

Who inspires you and how would your donation help more than a yonana? Seriously, I so nearly bought this yesterday.

Scientists are amazing - they help cure cancer and breed unicorns in captivity.

Shady Palms Cafe

Yum! We are two of Brisbane's fussiest breakfast gourmands going and so many cafes we've been to latley have just missed the mark - not this one. After a 18km ride on the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (we went in the AMs but it was stil so hot) we were pretty hungry - eat the arse out of a low flying duck kind of hungry. For some reason the Shady Palms Cafe popped into my mind so I Googled it and we stopped in on the way home.

We were after lunch, but it was only 11am so the breakfast menu was still on order - fear not hungry brunchers - the Shady Palms has your needs covered - in chimichurri sauce. We ordered the  pulled pork soft tacos with chimmichurri and the arepas. It was seriously good, it was delicious, I will go there again, you need to go there. Unfortunately today a very dead possum was festering away in the 30 degree heat nearby and wafts of putrefying mammal came in and out with the breeze - but even this didn't put me off.

I didn't have a camera and felt like too much of an arse-hat to instagram my brunch so I have borrowed some other clever peeps' pics for this post - link to the original source from the image.

The tacos ... oh yum!
Love this table from recycled timber - we are so making one too (The Street Photographer)
Shady Palms ... thanks Miss Foodie

I can't give it away, birthday present take two

I can't part with the bunny nightlight I bought yesterday, so I took myself along to Ipswich Road for some op-shopping and some handmade goodness. I found a lovely shop I've not seen before 'Betty's Shop' - I scored a cute Japanese miso plate/bowl set for only ten dollars. Then I went bit ape shit in Handmade Highsteet and bought some presents and more things for me ... I kind of had to, they were so cute.

Oops, left the price tag on ...

vintage postcards ... my next post will show you what these have become

more vintage postcards ...

The next edition ... will make for a good Sunday arvo read

Some for me, some for the birthday girl

I have one of these in green ... love it

shopping south side style

It has turned out to be another cracking September day in Brisbane today so we started this fine Saturday with a ride to Wooloongabba for a Pearl breakfast and a spot of shopping at Absolutely Fabulous. I bought this cute as bunny nightlight as a gift for a friend's birthday, then I decided I couldn't part with it so I had to take myself off for some handmade shopping at lunch!

Cute set of Japanese tin badges ...

Cutest nightlight ever...

it does say 'click' BTW ...

like me, like you ... giveaway

It's time for a giveaway and time to boost my Idiotbook page numbers ... I need you to help me. For more info click here and like yourself silly.

pick a clutch, any clutch ...

I need a new vessel to carry my coinage and general purse stuff. At the moment I have a cheap, orange one that was made in China. It was an emergency one I bought in a hurry. Ugh, I hate it and I like to wear/tote handmade where I can ... so I've decided a Sybella clutch is the way to go. My rewards cards seem to be breeding so I'll need to pop a little card wallet inside ... but more importantly what clutch do I pick? thoughts.

Packing up some brooches - destination USA

It's fun wrapping and packing my Etsy and Made It sales, I always love to see where they're going. My last sale (some brooches) is off to the US of A. I added a little extra in there as she bought three brooches and it's nice to get a surprise in the mail. I love getting mail.

Collage, you're doing it wrong

I want to buy a nice print, I typed in 'collage' to Etsy. Ugh, the amount of crap I had to sift through to find some actual art. Etsy seems to be flooded by sellers who think that putting a digitally printed elephant onto a book page is collage - it's not, and your art is just one of millions (of bad) items that are getting all up in my Etsy grills. Why can't people be original? Do Etsy 'beige' sellers shit you too?

People shit me. I did find some nice collage, it's cool and it's actually original art (I hope) in order they are; ARTintersect, dadadreams and Hagarastuff.

Sour starter...

I am making sourdough! I found a bunch of tutorials on the web after I got the bug (ha ha) from an article in Extra Curricular. So far I'm nearly at the 24 hour mark, so I'll be feeding it tonight :)

Some nice stuff on Sunday

We had a cracking breakfast this morning and topped it off with a strawberry and pawpaw smoothie in a tupperware tumbler. The dog has had a ride in the ute, the sun is shining, we did four loads of washing and now I'm blogging and looking at cool stuff on Pinterest, Made It and Etsy. I love Sundays, what did you do today?

Papaya papaya

One of the things I did really like about Bali were the drinks. I tried a papaya smoothie for the first time - it was yum. We eat a lot of red papaya with lime for breakfast, but I never really thought of is as a 'smoothie' kinda fruit. I was wrong.

I ordered a smoothie with lunch one day it was just yoghurt, honey and papaya. We gave it a burl when we got home ... we used Greek yoghurt so it was tangy but still nice. Next time I'll try a sweeter yoghurt and maybe omit the honey.

Slowly stocking

I am finally getting my crafty arse into gear and getting some of my stuff in local shops. First cab off the rank is Handmade Highstreet in Annerley. I've spent my public holiday making cards ... I love this arty farty business so much. Do you craft, do you love it?

I've been to Bail too

Yeah, about that. So we recently took a week-long holiday on the island if Bali with ten bazillion of our countrymen - also throw in the French, Russians, Chinese tour groups and a few Spaniards for good measure. I've travelled most of South East Asia so I kind of knew what I was up for, but this time I really just wasn't 'up' for for it.

We had some good food, some nice $5 cocktails and met some funny locals but all in all it left me a little tired and a little disappointed in the human race in general. The magnitude at which we are fucking things up is a bit soul destroying quite frankly.

Between the great unwashed tourist hoards who assume everything is for sale and an economy that sees the little guy hawking trinkets while the big guy take a cut from everyone's piece of pie - I would say Bali has lost its charm and probably its innocence.

If anything, travelling makes you see things in a different light and it sure helps you appreciate the little things. We have it pretty lucky here and I'm grateful for that.

Sour puss rant aside ... here are some of the nice things from a week in Bali

Last day on Legian Beach ... he bought me a pony.

Birds for your desk

The vintage swap cards I got the other day (see this post) have been made into little pieces of 'desk art' - if you a birdie to keep you singing when you get the rainbow wheel of death (I've forgotten what PC users get?) you'll find them in my Etsy shop.
