Sunday breakfast delights...

I love having having a big breakfast on the weekend, it makes it feel like it's really the weekend if there's high fat content involved. Mr reread cooked this morning, he made his signature 'smashy peas' - they're the bomb. We use frozen peas and just heat them up - no need to cook as they greener they stay, the better they taste - add lemon zest and juice and mint leaves. Then add them to ricotta on toast, with some crispy prosciutto and a poached egg. 

I miss having chickens as the eggs those girls used to give us were stellar eggs - the yolks were so orange and huge!

Baby it's cold outside...

It's freaking freezing in my house at the moment. Winter outside in a Queenslander is winter inside - there's no isulation in our roof and the floorboards are quite 'gappy' so the breeze comes right in.  I've been sitting at the table making cards and brooches, wrapped in a blanket. I figure my fellow Brisbane crafters are doing the same on this grey weekend ... so it's a good time to do some online shopping! Stolen fruits...

When I walk home from the bus stop there's a house with a garden that spills out on to the street - the garden has lots of fruiting things. I often pinch a passion fruit or a handful of cumquats as I pass by. Do you ever take a sneaky lemon or some rosemary cuttings?

Holidays, I love you so...

I'm going on a short holiday soon, one week in Bali. I've never been to Indonesia before and I must admit Bali was never high on the agenda, the boogie board bags, the beaded hair, the bogan hoards. But I've been told if we stay away from Kuta and the Australians with missing teeth we'll be fine. I love Asia, and the trip will be fun but I have a hankering to head well north - Russia, Germany, Finland - they're all on the list. Oh how I loved Russia. I'm thinking about learning Russian next year. Nyet Parusski!

I tried the 'disqus' tool on my blog as I thought it looks simple and quite cool. A few people told me via Twitter that they couldn't post and my comments have dropped off considerably since I started - so it's adios disqus.

Peter Rabbit ... win it, love it

It was a stellar Sunday here in Brisbane, we went for a walk with the dog in the the morning at Daisy Hill and then took the bikes for a spin in the afternoon sun. I used my silly new phone to 'track my ride' and we rode 22km in one hour and thirtyseven minutes (with a quick stop at South Bank) - pretty good for a Sunday. 

Sunday is generally a great day, usually there's tacos, beer and a zombie movie of some sort (although Monday always follows which sucks balls) so to celebrate how much I love Sundays, I'm giving away a set of twelve reread Peter Rabbit gift tags. Tip Shop finds from today, a lovely sunny Saturday

We are aiming to go camping sometime soon as Mr reread is dead keen on taking the new wheels to the country. We have a tent, air mattress, fuel burner, table, chairs, marquee (market girl is a handy camper!) but no esky .. until today.

We looked at a few at the camping shops and they were all at least $50, Mr reread was not keen shelling out for a glorified styrofoam box and suggested we thrift it up - good suggestion. The Tip Shop had about eight to choose from and we opted for two really cool retro 'coolibah' ones - and they were made in Melbourne!

I also picked up a drink chiller for my yoghurt - so now I can stand the glass jar upright while it sets - a huge whiteboard for the future office and a very cool hinged lamp - all for $52. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon reading Frankie in the sun with tea and then a spot of crafting.

I've been getting back in to We Heart It as I'm trying to build my social media standing from zero to 'a little bit above zero' ... I'm not quite hero status yet. I've added the little heart button to my Safari bar and I've used it to heart the crap out of the images on my reread blog - the image on We Heart It has the URL from the source, so it's all linky, linky.

it's yoghurt, it's in a jar

When I was in Germany recently, I took myself off to the supermarket for a bit of 'Euro supermarket  food porn' - one of my favourite things to do overseas is check out the local stupidmarket. Let me tell you, the aisles of Germany did not disappoint. There were cheeses, oh so many cheeses, nice tea, fresh berries, weird meats, breads and yoghurt in jars - in jars. I don't know why we don't have yoghurt in jars here, it looks way better and is probably better for you. So I just made some in my own jar (clevers I know). I used a Aldi brand mayo jar for a touch of the Deutschland, and it looks great. 

If you've not yet ventured into the cultured world of DIY yoghurt you're missing out. It's not as hard as you think and you don't need to bother with heating the milk up etc. just use UHT milk as it's already been heated to the right temperature.

It's as easy as...

a. take a tablespoon of yoghurt from an old batch or a tub of store bought yoghurt
b. add to the jar with two tablespoons of powdered milk (makes it lovely & creamy) & add UHT milk
c. stir & then sit in an esky or yoghurt maker (filled with 1/3 boiling water) for six to eight hours ...

More ways with jars, the breakfast smoothie to boot

This is my favourite smoothie mix at the moment, it's really yummy and fills you up first thing in the morning. You'll see my jar thing is still going strong - when I was a twenty year old student I drank wine from jam jars and not because I thought it was pretty, I was just povo!

What you'll need...

  • one ripe banana (better if it's frozen)
  • one red apple, the delicious are best
  • some yoghurt
  • honey
  • a small handful of almonds (about eight)
  • cinnamon
  • milk (I use soy)
Then just whizz the crap out of it and serve in a pretty glass jar with a straw - mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Bookfest booty ... four bags full

My stint volunteering at the Bookfest today was great, if you ever have a spare day or half day when this event is on I can recommend it. I had a good half hour before my shift and an hour post shift to buy books - I managed to load myself up with four huge bags ... all for the grand sum of $49.50, bargain.

I think I now have enough books to keep me in the gift tag and card business for a good few years, but that won't stop me from going back next year. Pre-loved awesomeness, love it ... also how German is Teddy? with his 'firm friends' ha ha so German. p.s. win a set of reread Bambi gift tags over here, they're cute to boot.

Bookfest, hark back to my 1997 checkout chick days

I feel like I should do more 'good' things so I have volunteered for the Lifeline Bookfest this year. I go to the event every time it's on and they do a great job - so today I'm front and centre on checkout! I was a checkout chick back in high school - good god, did I hate it! But I'm more than happy to check out today for a good cause. The Bookfest is on until 8pm tonight and from 8:30am until 6pm tomorrow. Find out more here...

bubble tea, how to make it at home

I am a bit of a bubble tea fan. It's something I like to buy as a treat every now and then, but it's pretty sugary unless you ask for half or no sugar. Here's a cheap way to cute the shit out of your Saturday afternoon and impress the pants of your friends while you're at it.

What you'll need;

- a pretty glass jar or a large drinking glass, 
- tapioca pearls - these can be bought online or in most Asian grocery stores, I got mine from the Asain grocer on Hardgrave Rd in West End,
- sugar, maple syrup or honey
- lemon juice or vanilla extract (or whatever flavour floats your boat)
- a big fat straw to suck up the bubbles with - buy online or just save one from your last store-bought tea

How to do it:

1. ok, so you bring some water to the boil and boil the pearls for about five minutes - they'll get nice an fat and rise to the top
2. while all that's going on make a lemon juice and sugar syrup - use as much or as little as you like 
3. strain the pearls and add them to the sugar syrup
4. fill your glass or jar halfway with boiling water and let a tea bag soak for a few minutes
5. add your pearls to jar or glass and then add a few spoonfuls of syrup (again add as little or as much as you think is a good thing)
6. top the other half of the jar or glass with milk (I use soy)
7. and then drink up!

mmmmm kale and chickpeas

I am a huge fan of the legume - if it's got a bean in it, I'll probably like it. Luckily Mr reread is also a massive bean man, lentils are his canned pulse hotspot right now. I have so many 'ways with beans' but I'm always looking for more. I found this little 'no bake' wonder on this ass-kicking foodie blog The Stone Soup. Mmmmmm yum, might hook into it tonight I think :)

My reread Made It and Etys shops have a few new additions this week - some bags with a redesigned babushka doll and a cute little dala horse prototype. They're all for sale online for under $15 ... freakin bargain! They'll be at my next market (for a little more) ... so if you're keen online is the way to buy these little bad boys.

all the pretty young things...

Sometimes I feel like I've been sucked into an internet black hole. Suddenly it's 11pm and I'm pinning things on Pinterest with a cold cup of tea and the dog eyeballing me with a 'where's my bloody dinner?' look. There's a lot of lovely things out there on the world wide web, there's also a lot of shit - I mean have you been on Etsy lately? Gone are the days of it being a lovely little handmade site full of crafty goodness. Now you need to sort through pages and pages of trash, tack and preserved deer tongues ... yes, deer tongues - I searched under 'deer' and a shop that specialises in preserved foetuses and other delightful things came up. OMG yuck. Anyway here's some lovely stuff iced by reread to get you over the horrible search hump...
